World Bank says broadband is a ‘no regrets’ investment
The World Bank’s lead ICT policy specialist Dr Tim Kelly has described investment in broadband infrastructure as a “no regrets” policy where even if the investment does not immediately deliver the direct benefits expected in terms of jobs and competitiveness, it will benefit the economy as a whole in terms of capacity-building, opportunity creation or speeding up the general flow of information.
In an interview with ComputerWorld Australia Editor Trevor Clarke, Dr Kelly said the broader intangible benefits of investment in broadband meant that it was rarely if ever a bad investment, and the Bank’s research indicated that every 10 percent increase in broadband penetration delivered a 1.4 percent increase in GDP.
